Welcome to Mallard
Years Five and Six
Class Teacher: Miss Smith
Welcome to Term 1 and Mallard Class!
The children have settled in well to the new term and are showing fantastic team work.
Mallard are showing superb enthusiasm towards our topic 'Landmarks', we have already got stuck into our learning by thought showering using the titles 'I know, I think, I wonder' where the children have begun to share what they would like to find out about their topic this term. Following on from these discussions we will be exploring Landmarks around the World for example; The London Eye, Ayres Rock and Avebury as well as exploring Landmarks in time beginning with Alexander Fleming and the discovery of Penicillin.
We will be exploring the materials of the Landmarks, looking at the difference between Man Made and Natural Landmarks. The children will be investigating the statement ' Are Natural Landmarks more permeable than Manmade Landmarks'.
The children have already begun exploring Landmarks around the World, we have explored the structure and shape and have recreated these using sketching pencils and water colours, they are beautiful! Our very exciting trip to London on the 22nd September will inspire and allow us to begin exploring the mechanisms of London Landmarks to create our own models using a variety of materials. Look out for photos next term.
In ICT the children will be challenged to create an interactive 'London Guide' using music, hyper-links, interactive maps, videos and photographs from our trip to London. We will be using a range of atlases and maps to locate the Landmarks as well as creating an inter-active map to show the journey taken on our 'London Guide'.
In Music we will be linking in with the 70th anniversary of 'The Blitz', where we will be listening to and performing a variety of World War II songs.
In Literacy we have enjoyed looking at Instructional Texts, we have begun identifying the features of an instructional text as well as developing our speaking and listening skills through a game of Twister where the children were challenged to use ambitious imperative verbs when giving the instruction, we had lots of fun!
The homework this term is to produce a project based on a personal landmark that has been significant in their life so far. This can be in the form of a poster, information leaflet, a mode or a Power Point presentation. As they are now in Years 5 and 6 I have very high expectations for this and will expect to see their work on a fortnightly basis to see how much progress they are making. There will also be additional homework throughout the term, which I will usually give the children a week to complete.
A fantastic start of the year for Mallard Class, as you can see we have a busy term ahead of us! Please feel free to come and see me if you have any questions.
